Messi Rejected Record $1.9 Billion Saudi Offer to Join Inter Miami

When Lionel Messi departed Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, few knew about the astronomical offer he left on the table. Former Al-Ittihad president Anmar Al Haili recently revealed the Saudi club offered the Argentine superstar a jaw-dropping €1.4 billion (approximately $1.9 billion CAD) to join their ranks.

That's right—nearly two billion Canadian dollars. And Messi declined.

According to Al Haili, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner turned down what would have been the richest contract in football history for one fundamental reason: his family's well-being. "I offered Messi €1.4bn, and he rejected such a high offer for the sake of his family, despite having convinced them," the former Al-Ittihad president disclosed.

Choosing Family Over Financial Fortune

The Saudi club made their move immediately after Messi's PSG contract expired, essentially presenting him with a blank cheque. However, the World Cup champion's priorities extended beyond financial gain.

"He did not hesitate to refuse, because family is more important than money," Al Haili stated. The former chairman mentioned that Al-Ittihad's door remains open should Messi ever reconsider.

Rather than Saudi Arabia's riches, Messi opted for Inter Miami and Major League Soccer. While not quite at Saudi levels, his MLS deal is hardly modest—he earns between €50-60 million ($68-82 million CAD) annually, complemented by profit-sharing arrangements with Apple and Adidas, plus real estate opportunities in South Florida.

Impact on Inter Miami's Future

Now 38, Messi recently committed his future to Inter Miami by extending his contract through 2028. The renewal, signed in October 2025, ended speculation about potential departures.

"It makes me very happy to continue here and carry on with this project," Messi told the club's official channels. He described playing at Miami Freedom Park as a dream come true.

For those following MLS betting markets, this long-term commitment carries significant weight. Messi's presence keeps Inter Miami as legitimate championship contenders and a magnet for world-class talent. Meanwhile, Al-Ittihad has assembled an impressive roster featuring Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kanté, and Fabinho, making them favourites in Saudi's Pro League.

The takeaway? Even $1.9 billion CAD can't always secure happiness. For Messi, lifestyle considerations and family priorities outweighed what would have been football's most lucrative contract ever.
