Carlos Queiroz Named Ghana Head Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup
"This is not just another job — it is a mission," declared Carlos Queiroz following his appointment as Ghana's head coach on Monday. Considering he resigned from his position with Oman merely three weeks earlier, one can only hope he's sincere about that commitment.
The Ghana Football Association finalized the hiring with under two months remaining before the World Cup tournament begins — far from the optimal preparation time for any manager, particularly one stepping into a completely unfamiliar squad. Following Otto Addo's dismissal on March 31 after the Black Stars suffered four straight defeats in friendly matches, the GFA found themselves without the option of taking their time. After evaluating more than 600 applications, they selected Queiroz. His credentials speak for themselves.
World Cup pedigree across three continents
Queiroz guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 World Cup. He led Portugal through to the knockout phase in 2010. He managed Iran at the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. That's four World Cup appearances spanning three different continents — the type of expertise that simply cannot be replicated when working under tight hiring constraints.
That said, vast experience doesn't compensate for a compressed two-month preparation period. Ghana kicks off their campaign in Group L against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before confronting England and Croatia in what shapes up as a genuinely challenging group. Friendlies are scheduled against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2, providing Queiroz with minimal match opportunities to implement his philosophy before competitive action begins.
To be frank, the Black Stars' group-stage betting odds aren't likely to shift dramatically based solely on this managerial change — the underlying concerns about team chemistry and current form remain unresolved despite having a more accomplished name managing from the technical area. What Queiroz does provide Ghana is legitimacy and tactical expertise on the sideline. Whether that proves sufficient given the restricted timeframe is the critical question mark.
He starts his duties right away. The countdown has already begun.
