Luca Zidane Handed Two-Match Suspension Following AFCON Controversy, Set to Face Messi at World Cup

Luca Zidane finds himself facing disciplinary consequences after Algeria's contentious departure from the Africa Cup of Nations. The goalkeeper has been handed a two-match suspension for his involvement in post-match confrontations following their quarter-final loss. However, Algerian supporters can breathe easy: he'll be ready to go when the Desert Foxes take on Lionel Messi and Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Confederation of African Football announced the suspension on Wednesday. Zidane, currently with Granada and the son of French football icon Zinedine Zidane, will serve his punishment during the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign beginning in September.

What led to this situation? The situation deteriorated rapidly after Algeria's 2-0 quarter-final loss to Nigeria on January 10 in Marrakech, Morocco. Multiple Algerian players and team officials became involved in intense altercations on the pitch. The situation escalated to the point where match official Issa Sy required protective measures and had to be safely removed from the field by security personnel.

Widespread Sanctions and Financial Penalties

Zidane wasn't alone in receiving punishment. Centre-back Rafik Belghali of Hellas Verona was also hit with a two-match suspension, along with an additional two-match suspended sentence. The Algerian Football Federation has indicated its intention to challenge all penalties imposed by CAF.

The monetary consequences are substantial as well. Algeria faces $100,000 in total fines for multiple infractions. These charges encompass inappropriate behaviour by players and staff members, supporters attempting to breach security perimeters, and fans allegedly "displaying bank notes" toward match officials—effectively suggesting bribery.

Major World Cup Clash on the Horizon

Despite the controversy, the 27-year-old keeper will be available for one of the tournament's marquee fixtures. Algeria opens their 2026 World Cup campaign against reigning champions Argentina on June 16 in Kansas City. This sets up a potential showdown between Zidane and Messi in what's expected to be a blockbuster encounter.

Algeria finds itself grouped with Austria and Jordan as well, creating a competitive yet manageable draw. For those following betting markets, Zidane's availability for the opening fixture represents critical intelligence. The goalkeeper's participation could meaningfully influence Algeria's chances against Argentina's talent-laden squad.

With the suspensions commencing in September, both Zidane and Belghali will be absent for the initial AFCON qualifying fixtures, though their World Cup participation remains secure. That's the key consideration for Algeria's technical staff as they prepare for football's premier global competition.
