North Carolina Courage Appoint Swedish Coach Mak Lind to Lead Fresh Era
The North Carolina Courage have found their new leader. Swedish tactician Mak Lind is making the transatlantic move to helm the NWSL side, bringing exactly the type of reset the organization has been searching for.
The 37-year-old coach touched down in North Carolina earlier this week and has wasted no time getting down to business. He leaves behind a stellar track record at BK Häcken, where he constructed an impressive project over the past two campaigns.
Courage supporters have plenty of reasons for optimism: Lind just steered BK Häcken to the Swedish championship with an extraordinary 21-1-4 record. The numbers tell the story—a staggering +68 goal difference. His squads know how to find the back of the net consistently.
"I'm kind of obsessed with scoring goals and how we're going to score goals," Lind remarked upon departing his previous club. Those words should resonate with Courage faithful who endured a ninth-place finish last campaign with an uninspiring -2 goal differential.
European Experience at the Highest Level
Lind's credentials extend beyond domestic triumphs. He navigated BK Häcken through to the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals in 2024, where they were eventually eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. That calibre of European competition brings valuable experience to the NWSL.
The appointment comes at an ideal moment. The Courage recently secured Swedish forward Evelyn Ijeh from AC Milan on a deal running through 2029. She netted 12 times in Serie A last season and aligns seamlessly with Lind's attack-minded approach.
As a side note, Ijeh featured for BK Häcken during 2021, though she and Lind never overlapped at the club. They'll now reconnect in North Carolina with an opportunity to create something meaningful.
Turning Over a New Leaf
This appointment signals a complete departure from the organization's troubled recent history. The Courage captured two NWSL championships in 2018 and 2019, but previous manager Paul Riley was dismissed in 2021 after severe misconduct allegations that were subsequently verified by league inquiries.
The subsequent two coaches—Sean Nahas and Nathan Thackeray—both worked under Riley, preventing the club from completely moving forward. Lind offers a completely fresh outlook with zero connections to that period.
For those considering wagers on the 2026 NWSL campaign, the Courage merit attention. A decorated coach with offensive credentials, combined with new attacking reinforcements, could yield improved outcomes compared to last season's playoff absence. The campaign kicks off March 14th when they host Racing Louisville.
Lind becomes only the third head coach in Courage franchise history, and he's importing European tactical expertise to a competition that's experiencing rapid growth in both quality and visibility. Should his Swedish achievements carry over to North America, North Carolina could find themselves back in championship contention faster than anticipated.
