Thapelo Maseko Secures European Loan Move to AEL Limassol from Mamelodi Sundowns

South African international Thapelo Maseko is making the jump to European football. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has finalized a loan transfer to Cypriot club AEL Limassol, departing Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The talented winger found himself on the outside looking in at Sundowns under manager Miguel Cardoso. His situation became even more challenging after the Brazilians bolstered their attacking options during the January transfer window, acquiring Monnapule Saleng from Orlando Pirates and South American forward Brayan Leon.

The move became necessary for Maseko's development, as he's accumulated just over 100 minutes of senior action throughout the entire season—far too little for a player with his capabilities and aspirations.

Joining Forces with Compatriot in Cyprus

AEL Limassol made the transfer official on Tuesday. Maseko will compete in the Cypriot First Division for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, linking up with fellow South African international Luther Singh. The loan arrangement extends through the end of the current season.

This represents Maseko's second opportunity to play in Cyprus. Aris Limassol previously attempted to secure his services at the beginning of the 2025-26 season, though those discussions ultimately broke down. He's now gotten his European chance with their cross-town rivals instead.

For those following the Betway Premiership, Maseko's exit reduces Sundowns' attacking depth as they pursue another league championship. That said, their recent acquisitions appear to have adequately addressed any potential gaps in the attacking third.

World Cup Aspirations Fueling Transfer

Maseko featured for Bafana Bafana during their impressive third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast. However, he was notably absent from the squad for the 2025 tournament in Morocco—a disappointment that likely motivated this move.

With the FIFA World Cup scheduled for later this year, Maseko understands the importance of consistent minutes to reclaim his spot in the national team picture. This loan opportunity could provide the platform he needs to re-establish himself with the Bafana Bafana coaching staff.

The promising winger began his professional journey with the now-defunct SuperSport United, logging 34 matches before transferring to Sundowns in 2023. Since arriving at the Pretoria-based club, he's made 45 appearances across all competitions, including the CAF Champions League and African Football League—the latter of which Sundowns claimed.

With seven international caps already to his name, Maseko will be eager to add to that tally. AEL Limassol expressed their enthusiasm about the addition, stating they're thrilled to have him represent the club in their blue and yellow kit through the end of the season.
