Anyone actually know when alberta igaming goes live?
ok so ive been hearing about this alberta igaming thing for like a year now and still nothing. the province keeps saying its coming but no actual date. im stuck using play alberta for sports which is fine i guess but i want more options legally. does anyone have a real timeline or is this just more government delays lol

honestly dont hold your breath on an exact date. last i checked they passed the iGaming Alberta Act earlier this year but the regulator (the new corporation) is still getting set up. most people in the know are saying early-to-mid 2025 for actual private operators going live but thats not locked in. in the meantime i just use Boomerang Bet which already works fine for me and payouts have been quick. play alberta is ok but the odds are kinda meh tbh

yeah can confirm the early 2025 timeline is what im hearing too. i talked to someone who works adjacent to the file and they said the framework is basically modeled after ontario so probably similar rollout. been using offshore stuff in the meantime with no issues, way better odds than play alberta

wait does this mean all the offshore sites im using now will become illegal once it launches? or do they just get the option to apply for a license

no they wont automatically be illegal. its more like ontario where operators can apply to be licensed and registered. the ones that get licensed operate legally, the rest are still in a grey zone same as now. they arent gonna come knock on your door for placing bets lol

fwiw the official line from the minister was that they want a competitive open market with multiple operators rather than the single monopoly model. thats why its taking a while, theyre setting up the whole regulatory body from scratch

idk man theyve been promising this for ages. ontario took forever too and there were a million delays before it actually happened. ill believe an alberta launch when i can actually log into a licensed site and not before

i mean fair but ontario DID eventually launch and now its huge. alberta literally hired the same kind of people and passed the act already. its not vaporware this time, the legislation is real. delays sure but its happening

for reference ontario announced their plans and it took roughly 2 years from legislation to actual launch. alberta passed theirs in spring 2024 so if you do the math early-mid 2025 actually lines up pretty reasonably

so once it launches will the bonuses and promos be like the offshore ones or more restricted? ontario seems pretty locked down on advertising stuff
30
probably more restricted yeah. ontario banned a lot of promo advertising and signup bonus ads. expect alberta to copy that since theyre using ON as the blueprint. you can still get bonuses you just wont see them plastered everywhere

one thing worth noting is that AGLC and the new iGaming corporation are technically separate. the new entity handles the open market regulation. just clears up some confusion ive seen people have about who actually runs what

honestly this whole thing is annoying. been waiting and waiting and the lack of a hard date drives me nuts. play alberta interface is clunky and slow and i hate that its our only real legal option right now. government moves at a snails pace

i get the frustration but to be fair these things take time to do properly. id rather they set up a solid regulated market than rush it and have a mess. ontario rushed some parts and had teething issues. patience kinda pays off here

agreeing with the top comment, early 2025 is the realistic window everyone serious is quoting. ive also been using one of the bigger international books while we wait and zero problems with deposits or cashouts. play alberta just cant compete on odds honestly
