Jude Bellingham Invests in Birmingham Phoenix Cricket Club in Hometown Move
"No matter how far you travel, you always carry your roots with you — before Madrid, before Dortmund, before everything." Those are the words of Jude Bellingham. And the Real Madrid midfielder has backed up that statement with a substantial investment.
The England international has acquired a 1.2% ownership stake in Birmingham Phoenix, his home city's franchise competing in The Hundred cricket competition. The transaction, equally divided between shares held by Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Knighthead Capital, carries a valuation approaching £1 million. Notably, Knighthead Capital's partnership roster includes NFL legend Tom Brady, placing Bellingham among elite sporting company.
An authentic investment rooted in genuine passion
This represents far more than a typical celebrity sports investment. Bellingham's Birmingham roots run deep — he was raised in the region and launched his football journey with Birmingham City. His affection for cricket is well-documented, with the midfielder openly stating that England cricket captain Ben Stokes is the one athlete he would switch careers with. This isn't manufactured PR speak — it reflects genuine appreciation for the sport.
Mark Baker, who chairs Hagley Cricket Club in Worcestershire where young Bellingham once played, offered a telling assessment: "Had he committed to cricket, he possessed the talent to achieve considerable success in the game." Baker recalled a particular catch that would have eluded most youth players. "Exceptional coordination... pure natural athleticism."
At just 22 years old, Bellingham ranks among football's most marketable global stars. He could deploy this capital in countless ventures. Instead, he selected a cricket franchise in his hometown. That choice speaks volumes.
The Phoenix benefit extends beyond the financial
Birmingham Phoenix aren't acquiring Bellingham's football credentials for the locker room — they're tapping into his massive following. His social media influence alone delivers value to a franchise working to expand The Hundred's audience that exceeds the £1 million investment figure. For a competition still establishing its market position, connecting with one of sport's most recognizable figures represents a genuine strategic advantage.
Whether this investment influences on-field performance remains uncertain. However, as ownership decisions go, few demonstrate this level of genuine local connection. "This investment is about pride," Bellingham explained. "About supporting where you come from."
He purchased 1.2% of a cricket club. Birmingham gained something far more valuable and difficult to quantify.
