Liverpool Legend Steve Nicol Auctions 1986 FA Cup Medal for Up to $35,000 CAD
A piece of Liverpool FC history is going up for auction as Steve Nicol's 1986 FA Cup winner's medal — earned during a memorable 3-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby final at Wembley — hits the auction block with an estimated value between $17,000 and $35,000 CAD. The Scottish defender's illustrious 13-year career at Anfield, which included three FA Cup titles, a European Cup triumph, and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year honour, is now being immortalized through this significant sale.
London-based Propstore auction house will conduct the sale between April 21 and May 14, featuring more than 50 items from Nicol's decorated career. While the FA Cup medal is the headline attraction, numerous other significant pieces are expected to draw considerable interest from collectors worldwide.
Complete auction lineup
- 1986 FA Cup winner's medal — $17,000 to $35,000 CAD
- 1984 European Cup winner's medal (Liverpool vs AS Roma, Stadio Olimpico) — $14,000 to $28,000 CAD
- 1989 FA Cup final match-worn shirt (Liverpool vs Everton) — $5,200 to $10,500 CAD
- 1989 FWA Footballer of the Year award — $3,500 to $7,000 CAD
- 1988 Scotland vs England Rous Cup match shirt — $1,750 to $3,500 CAD
- MLS All-Star jersey signed by David Beckham and Landon Donovan — $700 to $1,400 CAD
The 1984 European Cup medal carries tremendous historical significance. Liverpool's penalty shootout victory over AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico remains one of the most dramatic European finals in club history. Interestingly, despite its historical importance, the European Cup medal is estimated to fetch less than the FA Cup medal — a reflection of the domestic collector market's particular appetite for FA Cup memorabilia, especially from an all-Merseyside final.
Nicol reflects on parting with treasured mementos
"These items hold many personal memories," Nicol commented, "but I'm pleased to be offering them through Propstore, where they'll go to fans and collectors who share that passion for the game."
Now 64 years old, Nicol departed Liverpool in the mid-1990s and enjoyed brief spells with Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, and Doncaster Rovers before relocating to the United States in 1999 to work in Major League Soccer. The signed MLS All-Star shirt featuring autographs from David Beckham and Landon Donovan represents an interesting connection to Nicol's post-Liverpool career across the Atlantic.
Propstore specialist Alastair McCrea emphasized the rarity of the offering: "It's not often that material of this quality and provenance becomes available." For serious collectors, this represents a unique opportunity. For football fans who witnessed Nicol's dominant performances during Liverpool's First Division reign in the late 1980s, it's a chance to acquire tangible pieces from one of English football's most successful eras.
International bidding is now open. The estimated value of the FA Cup medal alone positions this as one of the most significant Liverpool memorabilia auctions in recent memory.
