Guillermo Hoyos Takes Over as Inter Miami Interim Head Coach Following Mascherano Departure
Less than half a year after capturing the MLS Cup, Inter Miami find themselves searching for a new head coach. Javier Mascherano stepped down from his position on Tuesday, leaving the defending champions in the hands of Ángel Guillermo Hoyos, whose recent managerial record shows just one victory in his last 13 matches while coaching in Bolivia.
Hoyos, who has been serving as the club's sporting director, will temporarily move to the sidelines to guide the first team. The decision to shift a sporting director into the head coaching role suggests Inter Miami were caught off guard by Mascherano's departure and needed an immediate internal solution.
Examining Hoyos' Coaching Background
The numbers from Hoyos' managerial career aren't particularly encouraging. During his stint with Oriente Petrolero in 2023, he managed just one win alongside four draws and eight losses over 13 matches. His previous experience includes 57 games across three clubs — Talleres de Córdoba, Aldosivi, and Atlas in Mexico's Liga MX — where he posted 15 victories, 12 draws, and 28 defeats. Over half of those matches resulted in losses.
Hoyos' primary responsibility will be maintaining stability while ownership group members Jorge Mas and David Beckham conduct their search for a permanent manager. The club has confirmed this process is already in progress.
Meanwhile, Hoyos inherits the task of coaching Lionel Messi — a role that could be viewed as either a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity or an incredibly high-pressure situation, depending on perspective.
Organizational Changes in South Florida
Mascherano's departure has triggered additional changes throughout the organization. Alberto Marrero is transitioning from director of football into the sporting director position — the same role Hoyos is leaving behind to take the coaching reins. Inter Miami is essentially restructuring its entire football operations department at once.
Mascherano's time with the club shouldn't be considered unsuccessful. He guided the team to an MLS Cup championship and advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal round. However, this season's Round of 16 exit against Nashville appears to have prompted the organizational shift.
Miami's performance under Hoyos during this interim period will significantly impact their chances as the MLS season progresses. A squad built around Messi facing leadership uncertainty at the top creates an uncomfortable scenario for supporters and bettors alike.
The sooner a permanent head coach is secured, the better for everyone involved.
