Figo Blasts Mbappé for Poisoning Real Madrid Locker Room Chemistry
Luis Figo isn't holding back. The Portuguese legend believes Real Madrid's disappointing campaign comes down to fractured locker room dynamics—and he's pointing the finger directly at Kylian Mbappé. Speaking with MARCA, the Ballon d'Or winner and current Laureus Academy member delivered the kind of brutally honest assessment most former players carefully sidestep.
"Mbappé's arrival has filled the Real Madrid dressing room with selfishness," Figo stated plainly. It's a scathing indictment of a player the Spanish giants pursued relentlessly for years, investing massive resources and political goodwill to secure his signature. Regardless of what Mbappé's individual statistics show, if he's caused division within the squad, that represents a fundamental issue—one clearly reflected in Madrid's results this season.
Alonso never got a proper opportunity
Regarding the mid-season managerial switch from Xabi Alonso to Álvaro Arbeloa, Figo didn't mince words: "I don't think he has had time. We haven't even had time to make an analysis of the months he has been here. It's very complicated."
Figo isn't necessarily defending Alonso's tactical approach. Rather, he's acknowledging the impossibility of fairly evaluating a coaching stint that was terminated before it could take any meaningful form. The decision-makers at the Bernabéu clearly acted without much patience—or sufficient evidence.
"The reality is that it is a bad season," Figo continued. "For Madrid, if you don't win, it's always a negative season. When titles are missing, it's because things weren't working." It's difficult to dispute that logic. An institution built on championship pedigree doesn't have the luxury of reframing disappointment as reconstruction.
PSG and Bayern his Champions League favourites
With the semi-final matchups determined, Figo identified his tournament favourites without hesitation: PSG and Bayern Munich. "They are two very strong teams. I like their way of playing football, but anything can happen."
From a wagering standpoint, both clubs have demonstrated the knockout-stage consistency that warrants favourable odds. PSG especially have appeared transformed during this European run—more tactically organized and less reliant on individual magic. Bayern's relentless machine continues churning forward as always.
Figo also shared his thoughts on the 2026 World Cup landscape, positioning Portugal as an intriguing contender—not among the traditional powerhouses, but genuinely threatening based on current talent. He identified France, Spain, Brazil, and England as the leading candidates, notably placing Argentina below its customary elite tier in his assessment.
Regarding Lamine Yamal, Figo kept his praise straightforward: "It's incredible. He's an incredible talent." At just 17 years old, Yamal is already reshaping how opposing defenders prepare for Barcelona's attacking threats. His baseline talent level already exceeds what most professional players achieve across entire careers.
