Italian Legend Cristiana Girelli Joins Bay FC to Solve NWSL Scoring Crisis
Bay FC faced a significant challenge last season, finishing second-to-last in the NWSL standings while managing just 26 goals—the lowest output across the entire league. For a club with aspirations of competing for playoff spots, this offensive drought represented a critical issue that needed immediate attention.
The California-based club may have found their answer. Bay FC has secured Italian superstar Cristiana Girelli on loan from Italian giants Juventus, with the agreement running through August 2026. This high-profile acquisition could prove to be the catalyst that transforms their attacking fortunes.
Girelli brings exceptional credentials to the NWSL. Italy's all-time leading goal scorer recently captured the Serie A Women's golden boot for the 2024-25 campaign and earned a Ballon d'Or nomination. Her international resume includes 120 appearances and 61 goals for the Azzurre, while her club career has produced an impressive 250 goals. These are precisely the numbers Bay FC needs to address their scoring deficiency.
"The NWSL for me has always been a league that I believe is one of the best in the world, maybe the best," Girelli shared with Sports Illustrated. The 35-year-old forward expressed enthusiasm about the league's competitive nature and the passionate atmosphere that characterizes American football stadiums.
Emotional Departure from Turin
The decision to leave Juventus wasn't made lightly for the veteran striker. Girelli dedicated eight seasons to the Bianconere, collecting six Serie A championships and cementing her status as a club icon. When news of her departure surfaced, supporters in Turin were stunned, and Girelli acknowledged that saying goodbye was the most difficult aspect of her move.
"It's as if I'm leaving the love of a lifetime," she explained. However, at this stage of her career, she recognized that time is limited. She wanted to experience football in a different environment before hanging up her boots.
Since this is strictly a loan arrangement, Girelli maintains her connection to Juventus. She's pursuing a new adventure and seeking fresh motivation while still capable of competing at elite level.
Italian Players Making Their Mark in America
Girelli becomes the fourth Italian international to transfer from Serie A to the NWSL since July of last year. Sofia Cantore, Lisa Boattin, and Lucia Di Guglielmo previously made the transatlantic journey, and all three have encouraged Girelli about the experience that awaits her.
This exodus of Italian talent to North America gained momentum following Italy's remarkable semi-final appearance at the UEFA Women's Euros. That tournament elevated the profile of Italian women's football internationally, attracting attention from top leagues worldwide.
For those following Bay FC's season projections, Girelli's signing represents a potential turning point. A squad that managed only 26 goals last campaign now boasts one of Europe's most accomplished finishers. Their playoff qualification prospects should see considerable improvement, particularly if Girelli remains fit and adjusts quickly to the NWSL's more physical playing style.
Bay FC begins their campaign on March 14 with a home fixture against expansion side Denver Summit FC. Girelli will link up with the squad following Italy's World Cup qualifying matches against Sweden and Denmark in early March, leaving her with minimal preparation time before the season opener.
"I really can't wait to join Bay, get to know my future teammates, and learn a new style of play," Girelli stated. She's committed to delivering maximum effort daily for her new club. Given her proven track record, that commitment should translate into plenty of goals.
