Wolfsburg Axe Coach and Sporting Director as Relegation Battle Intensifies

The situation at VfL Wolfsburg has reached crisis levels. The Bundesliga side has dismissed both their head coach and sporting director following an eighth consecutive match without a victory. The Volkswagen-supported club is now in full emergency mode.

Head coach Daniel Bauer was relieved of his duties Sunday morning, coming just hours after sporting director Peter Christiansen was let go Saturday evening. The dual sacking followed a devastating 2-1 home defeat to Hamburger SV that kept Wolfsburg entrenched in the relegation zone with only nine fixtures remaining to rescue their campaign.

Remarkably, this marks Wolfsburg's second managerial change of the current season. Paul Simonis was dismissed back in November following a disappointing start to the campaign, with Bauer promoted from the Under-19 squad to assume control on an interim basis. Now he too has become a casualty of the club's struggles.

Supporter Unrest and Pitch Confrontations

The mood inside the stadium turned hostile following the Hamburg loss. Masked Wolfsburg supporters hurled flares onto the playing surface, creating clouds of black smoke behind the net. At the same time, players from both clubs became involved in a heated confrontation on the pitch.

Prior to kickoff, fans had unfurled a banner declaring it was the squad's final opportunity while voicing their backing. Following the final whistle, however, a different message appeared: "Opportunity squandered, backing revoked." A harsh statement indeed.

Several hundred supporters had even gathered at the training facility the previous day in an attempt to motivate the players. The gesture proved ineffective.

Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler acknowledged they had hoped for improvement but determined that a "fresh stimulus" was necessary to prevent relegation. The club has indicated they will reveal a new head coach shortly, with media reports suggesting Dieter Hecking is the frontrunner to make a comeback.

Christiansen, who had occupied his position since 2024, achieved success with the women's programme but was unable to halt the men's team's decline. Bauer had been associated with the club's youth academy since 2016 in multiple capacities.
