Smicer: Liverpool Can't Say No to Klopp Comeback

"I think it's impossible." Those are the words of former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer when asked about the possibility of the Reds turning down a Jurgen Klopp return — and considering the current atmosphere surrounding Anfield, it's not as outlandish as it might initially seem.

Smicer shared these thoughts after taking to the pitch alongside Klopp during last Saturday's 2-2 legends match between LFC Foundation and Borussia Dortmund Legends. The fixture marked Klopp's first appearance on Merseyside since his departure in 2024, and the reception he received spoke volumes. The stadium was packed to capacity. The atmosphere was electric. And remarkably, he wasn't even in a managerial capacity.

Slot Under Growing Pressure

The timing of Klopp's visit is noteworthy. Current manager Arne Slot has encountered increasing criticism this campaign, and whenever Liverpool stumbles, discussions inevitably drift back to the German tactician. While it may seem harsh on Slot — following in Klopp's footsteps was always going to be a monumental challenge — it's the unavoidable consequence of succeeding a manager who captured every major domestic and European trophy during his nine-year tenure.

Klopp himself has remained diplomatic about any potential return. He downplayed comeback rumours last month, and his present position as Head of Global Soccer within the Red Bull organization provides him with professional fulfillment without the week-to-week demands of club management. During the legends fixture, he jokingly referred to his assistant role alongside Kenny Dalglish as "the easiest job he's ever had." The comment seemed genuine.

Nevertheless, Smicer remains adamant that Anfield's magnetic pull will ultimately prove irresistible. "He has something special with the Liverpool supporters, the city, and the football club," the Czech Republic international explained. "If you ask anyone in Liverpool whether Jurgen Klopp should return someday, everyone will answer yes."

Klopp's Comments on His Return

For his part, Klopp was glowing about the experience while remaining tight-lipped about his future plans:

  • Said he "enjoyed every second" of his Anfield homecoming
  • Called seeing former Liverpool and Dortmund teammates reunited "really, really, really nice"
  • Praised Thiago Alcantara, saying he "alone was worth the ticket price"

Those hoping for concrete evidence that Klopp is preparing to walk back through those famous doors will need to exercise patience. However, Liverpool's title chances this season have appeared more fragile than anticipated, and if results continue to disappoint, the question of whether Klopp would actually decline an offer transitions from lighthearted speculation to legitimate football discourse.

"I think we will see him back one day," Smicer concluded. He could be correct. He could be indulging in nostalgia. The distance between those two possibilities currently mirrors the precariousness of Arne Slot's position at the club.
