Ted Lasso Star Cristo Fernández Earns Professional Soccer Contract With El Paso Locomotive FC
"Football is life" wasn't just a memorable catchphrase from Ted Lasso — for Cristo Fernández, it's become his reality once again.
The 35-year-old actor, widely recognized for his portrayal of the eternally optimistic Dani Rojas on Apple TV+'s hit comedy series, has officially signed a professional contract with El Paso Locomotive FC in the USL Championship. This move is far from a marketing gimmick or celebrity appearance — Fernández legitimately earned his spot on the roster following a two-month trial period that began after he impressed club officials during 30 minutes of preseason action.
Fernández's soccer journey began in Mexico, where he competed until a devastating injury at age 15 forced him to hang up his boots. Fast forward twenty years, and he's managed to resurrect his professional playing career. Earlier in 2025, he trained with Chicago Fire II in MLS Next Pro before ultimately securing his opportunity with the Texas-based club.
Fernández's Role With the Locos
The midfielder brings more than just acting credentials to El Paso. While questions remain about how much playing time he'll receive and whether he'll become a key contributor on the pitch, head coach Junior Gonzalez has already highlighted his impact off it — particularly the infectious positivity he demonstrated as a character in the fictional AFC Richmond changing room.
Still, El Paso Locomotive FC isn't handing out contracts as favours. Operating in a competitive league alongside clubs like Phoenix Rising FC, the team put Fernández through legitimate paces during preseason before committing to the extended trial. USL Championship sides don't make roster decisions based on social media following.
"Soccer has always been central to who I am, and regardless of where my career has taken me, the aspiration to play professionally never truly disappeared," Fernández stated in an official club announcement. He also described himself as "a crazy man with crazy dreams" — a fitting description for someone joining a team nicknamed the Locos.
Rivalry Matches Set for June and September
Two fixtures on El Paso's schedule are guaranteed to attract significant attention. The Locomotive will host Phoenix Rising FC on June 13, followed by the away leg on September 19. Fernández is expected to be involved in both encounters, bringing unprecedented mainstream attention to the USL Championship.
The real test now is whether the Hollywood star can convert that publicity into meaningful contributions between the lines. The trial phase is complete, the contract is official, and the spotlight is on. Now comes the hard part: proving he belongs.
